Seven Signs Your Water Heater Needs To Be Replaced

The condominiums here at Overlook Lakes do not have basements and as a result, hot water heaters are in “closets” within the living area. Most of the time, we don’t really give them much thought, but because each unit is in the living space, there is a need to be taking precautions to minimize the risk of water heater failure. Such a failure can be very damaging to not only your own living area but also to the living areas of your neighbors in the adjoining units and to the common areas of the building.

Here are 7 signs your water heater may be about to fail:

  1. You only have cold water.
  2. Your water gets warm but never hot.
  3. Your water heater makes a rumbling noise or other strange sounds.
  4. Your water is rusty, muddy or discolored.
  5. Your water has a metallic smell or taste.
  6. Water is leaking around your hot water heater.
  7. Your water heater is more than 8-10 years old. It it’s older than that, your water heater is on borrowed time and should be replaced.

If you experience any of these warning signs or it’s getting close to the end of your water heater’s serviceable life, contact a plumbing professional for a professional opinion on replacement. Water heater failure can cause thousands of dollars in damage not to mention the inconvenience involved in the repairs/replacement of furnishings and other personal belongings. Your neighbors will thank you, too!
